Natasha Lance Rogoff, «Muppets in Moscow: The Unexpected Crazy True Story of Making Sesame Street in Russia»: The following week, the amended sketches of Zeliboba and the new drawings for the other two Muppets are sent to Ed Christie at the Henson Company in New York by FedEx. Inspired by the team's suggestions, Ed says he will need several weeks to develop more detailed drawings of the new Muppets. During this period, faxes and emails fly between the Russian and American groups, hammering out the final details, including the fabric, wardrobe, type of feathers, and particular leaves sewn onto Zeliboba's coat. One day at the Moscow office, when Tamara is eyeballing the latest final Henson Company drawings of Zeliboba laid out on a conference table, she suddenly yells, "Instead of lapti [traditional straw sandals], Zeliboba should wear enormous white Nike-style sneakers like all the kids in Moscow are wearing!" Everyone loves this idea. Someone else then shouts, "And Zeliboba should wear a wide paisley tie." This idea also receives praise. Back in US, Ed tells me that Zeliboba will be one of the largest Muppets ever constructed: more than seven feet tall. "His construction design is based on a system of conical spiraling boned supports," Ed explains. The Henson elves will sew fake pieces of bark, moss, twigs, and leaves into Zeliboba's coat, conforming to the Russian producers' wish for Zeliboba to be "at one" with nature. When I arrive at the Henson Company Mansion, Ed leads me to the area of the workshop where several artists, with varying shades of purple and green hair and pierced body parts, are hunched over a ten-yard piece of mesh netting. They are weaving strips of sky blue, royal blue, aqua, and pink shantung and organza fabrics into the synthetic fur mesh that will become Zeliboba's exterior coat. Unlike Big Bird, made of expensive ostrich feathers imported from China, Zeliboba's design uses boas and marabou feathers.
