1) Throw a (monkey) wrench in the works – ставить палки в колеса, чинить препятствия. Британский аналог – “throw a spanner in the works”

The lack of funding really threw a monkey wrench in the works.

2) Toot your own horn – хвастаться. Британский аналог – “blow your own trumpet”.

I am not tooting my own horn, but when I was a student I never had to retake exams.

2) Sweep (something) under the rug – заметать следы, утаивать что-то. Британский аналог – “sweep something under the carpet”.

I hate when these sneaky politicians are trying to sweep things under the rug.

3) Peaks and valleys – взлеты и падения, черные и белые полосы. Британский аналог – “peaks and troughs”.

I am going through a lot of peaks and valleys this year. One day everything seems great, and the next day I think that my life has never been so miserable.

4) Knock on wood – фраза, которую произносят, чтобы не сглазить и не спугнуть удачу. Британский аналог – “touch wood”.

I’ve never been in a serious car crash. Knock on wood.

5) Not touch something with a ten-foot pole – на пушечный выстрел не подойти.
Британский аналог – “not touch something with a barge pole”.

I wouldn't touch this kind of food with a ten-foot pole.
