Many holidaymakers were left high and dry because of the lockdown.

4) Take the wind out of one’s sails – выбить почву из-под ног, убить веру в себя.

Her parents’ criticism took the wind out of her sails for years.

5) Be on the rocks – попасть в неприятность.

After a few months of being put on hold, our business is on the rocks.
