"Handsome" is a perfectly acceptable word in American English (certainly in American English as spoken by educated adult speakers) when describing a certain type of attractive woman, and there is nothing whatsoever about the word that would make its choice "poor", other than the possibility that the woman described is not, in fact, handsome.
