The Boy Bathing by Aesop A Boy was bathing in a river and got out of his depth, and was in great danger of being drowned. A man who was passing along a road heard his cries for help, and went to the riverside and began to scold him for being so careless as to get into deep water, but made no attempt to help him. "Oh, sir," cried the Boy, "please help me first and scold me afterwards." Give assistance, not advice, in a crisis. @one_story

Looking for Angels. Sarah Salway Not even the best shepherd can keep his flock completely safe Read 9 min
    Looking for Angels. Sarah Salway

A growl and then nothing. It was the silence that surprised George Donald. Since they'd been grazing the sheep on Clapham Common, his sheepdog had become quick to bark at intruders.     George peered out from behind the sheep to see Birk, tail swishing to and fro, sitting in front of a youngish man. George knew that dogs could smile, but Birk was positively drooling. 🍓 Запрещённое в соцсетях искусство — t.me/kartiny/6166     'Nice dog, but shouldn't he be on a lead?' the man shouted over. Three Desert Stories 3 (Bad Mexican Food). Daniel Riesco The clock on the wall was red. It said 3:37. Tick. Tick. Tick. The paint running dry, the rim cracked and falling to pieces. I went to the bathroom. It said OMBRES which any idiot knows is spelled wrong. Guess no one ever said anything. I tried to pee but nothing came out. My heart was pounding. Eked out some dribbles. Washed my face. Looked at myself. Looked fine. Good enough. Went back out. Journey back to the table was long. Waitress with caked on makeup and a bad tan smiled at me and I nodded back. Why she needed a fake tan in this place was beyond me. Smelled like cheap cigarettes. And back to the table. There she was. She was there, and she smiled at me and her smile was so familiar and so far away, all the way across the table, all the way past my bad enchiladas with salsa verde, all the way over the dirty cups and her own crappy tacos. Outside in the heat, I thought, a mouse scurries under a car, a cactus grows, and they are impartial. She looked at me with wonderful blue eyes. They are really something. She didn't look great, she had a bit of acne, but I still felt it. I had it bad. And we just stared at each other, didn't say a thing. I couldn't eat. Neither could she. I remembered all the old jokes. Her lips were gorgeous. This was some time ago, but I still remember the place, with the red crumbling clock, the OMBRES sign, the waitress with bad makeup, the flavorless food. And I remember her face, the way she looked at me, and how I looked at her, and what her eyes said. They said the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I took the enchiladas to go. She paid. When we left, I said I'd never forget her. She didn't say anything. I remember all of these things, and how they came to pass, in the desert, in the sands, somewhere in Arizona. She does too. It was bad Mexican food. After I said goodbye, I threw it away. @one_story

Ten Short Tales of Unease. 1 People say that opportunities should be grabbed whenever they appear so, with this thought in mind, I jumped aboard the plane. I made myself as comfortable as I could in the small space and as the wheels pulled in next to me and the flap closed I wondered where I'd land. 2 As I turned the page the edge cut my finger. As with any small cut I put it to my mouth to suck it clean but I found that my mouth started to fill with words, not blood. I spat them out but they just kept coming at such a speed that I was soon suffocated by them. 3 It's just one of those really annoying things about ageing. The eyes of needles seem to get smaller and smaller while the lenses of glasses get thicker and thicker. I recently received a wonderful needle threader which means I can now continue to sew loose lips together. 4 It had taken me ages but I finally managed to engineer a meeting which I hoped would look accidental. I knew which restaurant, the table he favoured and his usual dining time so I had booked my table accordingly. Everything went smoothly. I even left a tip near his corpse. 5 We moved into our newly restored house after months of making the place fit for purpose. In the now uncovered and cleaned fireplace we lit the logs and sat back to relax in its glow. The flames grew higher and brighter and we watched shapes start to emerge and come towards us. 6 I fought hard but finally the joystick was forced into my hands and I heard the words that I hoped I would never hear being spoken "you have control now". My body went into panic mode and a cold sweat engulfed me. "What if I crashed?" I thought. The noise in the arcade grew. 7 I continued to wait in the queue even though I doubted I would reach the counter before the place closed. It wasn't hope that sprang eternal but the desperate desire to get the deed done before the day's end. The gun grew heavier in my pocket and the mask sweatier. 8 I crept into the cathedral as the service was ending. I knew he always attended evening mass and so it seemed the perfect opportunity. It also seemed fitting that he would die having confessed his sins and with the holy wine and wafer still dissolving on his tongue. 9 With the family gathered, curtains drawn and all the lights off, she slipped the first slide into the projector. The adults there chuckled when they saw their younger selves and the children asked incredulously "Is that you?" Then a shadow rabbit danced across the screen. 10 The dragon roamed Europe, sometimes discreetly and sometimes creating havoc by belching fire and eating whole villages. He'd lost his mate, slaughtered by bloody George, and generally felt no sympathy for these strange, bald, bipeds. He'd eat every one of them if he could. @one_story

    Nineties Man. A.I. Thomas

I moved to my little corner of suburbia three years ago. Before this, I dwelt in southeast London amidst a whirlwind of cultures, sounds, experiences, and sights. London never seemed to stop, it constantly refreshed and challenged the senses. Moving to a rather sleepy suburban town in the depths of Hampshire was something of a shock to the system at first. Initially, I thought everyone here looked the same. They dressed the same, they all had that slightly fearful look in their eyes as if any moment their suburban…

    Morg. Clare Reddaway

Morg was cross. She was more than cross, she was furious. She had been chosen to mind her little brother, again. Normally she quite liked him, as he stumbled after her on his short legs, babbling in a way that made her laugh, but today there was something much more exciting happening. The men were preparing to go on a hunt. There hadn't been a hunt for months. First there was too much rain and then there was too much work with the harvest. But now the wheat was in and the grain was all stored in pits. The Druid…
