💡The difference between the modal verb NEED and the notional verb NEED This is my first attempt at posting an English grammar video. I shortened it a bit because the full version is too long, heavy and with a lot of extra words. Подведём итоги по понимаю разницы между смысловым глаголом need/s (don't/doesn't need to) и его братом-близнецом (скорее братом-двойняшкой😁) модальным глаголом need (needn't): 1️⃣ REVISE the RULE 1 / REVISE the RULE 2 📕 Различия между 💡don't need to (смысловой глагол) и 💡needn't (модальный глагол) СМЫСЛОВОЙ ГЛАГОЛ: 📌 don’t need to - нет необходимости в чем-то в ОБЩЕМ You don’t need to work on Sundays (habitual thing). МОДАЛЬНЫЙ ГЛАГОЛ: 📌 needn't - в чем-то нет необходимости по какому-то отдельному, особому случаю You needn't work today (specific occasion). 2️⃣ REVISE the RULE 3 модальный глагол need / needn't: 📌 needn't - на русский язык этот модальный глагол лучше переводить необязательно Он нам сообщает о том, что действие можно совершить, но в нем нет необходимости. He needn’t do it. Ему не обязательно делать это. 📌 need, как модальный глагол в утвердительных предложениях встречается в основном в формальной (официальной) речи. Чаще всего его сопровождает какое-то отрицательное слово: no one / nobody – никто, nothing – ничто, never – никогда. На русский язык такие фразы переводятся словами не следует, нет необходимости. No one need be surprised at what happened.
