Not long ago I sent a small tweet out into the universe: Airport cashier: “Have a safe flight.” Me: “You too!” I CAN NEVER COME HERE AGAIN. It was a tiny glimpse into the awkwardness of being me, but it set off a tsunami of responses that I still haven’t entirely recovered from. Shockingly it was not from people telling me how stupid I am, but from people sharing how stupid they are. Once high-fived a retail staffer who was helping me. Turns out she was waving to a friend outside the store. Still not over it. I texted my boss at the end of my FIRST DAY on the new job with: “Heading out. Love you.” Intended for my boyfriend. An elderly man presented his discount card to me and I said, “You’re getting ready to expire!” I could not recover. I talk fast and once told a customer at a bookstore that a new novel had made the “Man Licker Bonglist.” (Man Booker Longlist) My coworker asked what I was eating for lunch. I told her placenta. I meant polenta.:/ I once accidentally texted my boss a soundclip of me flushing a toilet. The more stories that came in, the more I could relate to. And I wasn’t alone.
