Ruby Elliot, «It's All Absolutely Fine: Life is Complicated, So I've Drawn it Instead»:
How do I begin to describe what having an eating disorder is like?
I could sit here and tell you horror stories about my experiences with anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. I could because I've been there done that and got the T-shirts in every single bloody size, but if you've ever had an eating disorder all that stuff will be very familiar anyway. And if you haven't, I don't want to cough up a load of misery porn at you written only in terms of dramatic weight loss or out of control calorie consumption. Those things are just some of the tangible manifestations of a very real and complex mental illness. I want to focus on the bit that happens above the shoulders; about what an eating disorder does to yer noggin.
So, putting aside the fact that I'm (shockingly) not a neuroscientist, let's call this the mind. (Yes, I know, I could have drawn a brain but I don't have time for that squiggly nonsense.)
