View QSB-079 in the qubes-secpack: github.com/QubesOS…2022.txt In addition, you may wish to: Get the qubes-secpack: https://www.qubes-os.org/security/pack/ View all past QSBs: https://www.qubes-os.org/security/qsb/ View the XSA Tracker: https://www.qubes-os.org/security/xsa/ ---===[ Qubes Security Bulletin 079 ]===--- 2022-04-05 Two IOMMU-related Xen issues (XSA-399, XSA-400) User action required --------------------- Users must install the following specific packages in order to address the issues discussed in this bulletin: For Qubes 4.0, in dom0: - Xen packages, version 4.8.5-39 For Qubes 4.1, in dom0: - Xen packages, version 4.14.4-4 These packages will migrate from the security-testing repository to the current (stable) repository over the next two weeks after being tested by the community. [1] Once available, the packages are to be installed via the Qubes Update tool or its command-line equivalents. [2] Dom0 must be restarted afterward in order for the updates to take effect. If you use Anti Evil Maid, you will need to reseal your secret passphrase to new PCR values, as PCR18+19 will change due to the new Xen binaries. Summary -------- The following security advisories were published on 2022-04-05: XSA-399 [3] "race in VT-d domain ID cleanup": | Xen domain IDs are up to 15 bits wide. VT-d hardware may allow for only | less than 15 bits to hold a domain ID associating a physical device with | a particular domain. Therefore internally Xen domain IDs are mapped to | the smaller value range. The cleaning up of the housekeeping structures | has a race, allowing for VT-d domain IDs to be leaked and flushes to be | bypassed. XSA-400 [4] "IOMMU: RMRR (VT-d) and unity map (AMD-Vi) handling issues": | Certain PCI devices in a system might be assigned Reserved Memory | Regions (specified via Reserved Memory Region Reporting, "RMRR") for | Intel VT-d or Unity Mapping ranges for AMD-Vi. These are typically used | for platform tasks such as legacy USB emulation. | | Since the precise purpose of these regions is unknown, once a device | associated with such a region is active, the mappings of these regions | need to remain continuouly accessible by the device. This requirement | has been violated. | | Subsequent DMA or interrupts from the device may have unpredictable | behaviour, ranging from IOMMU faults to memory corruption. Impact ------- The precise impact of XSA-399 and XSA-400 is system-specific but would typically be a denial of service (DoS) affecting the entire host. Privilege escalation and information leaks cannot be ruled out. XSA-399 affects only Qubes OS 4.1. Qubes OS 4.0 is not affected due to the version of Xen it uses. This issue affects only qubes with assigned PCI devices, which are sys-net and sys-usb in the default Qubes OS configuration. XSA-400 affects both Qubes OS 4.0 and 4.1. It affects only qubes with assigned PCI devices that have an associated RMRR or unity map.     Whonix support for Qubes 4.0 extended www.qubes-os.org/news/20…extended The Whonix Project has extended its support for Whonix templates on Qubes 4.0 by an additional month to 2022-04-20. This comes after an initial 16-day extension when the release of Qubes 4.1 was originally announced (www.qubes-os.org/news/20…es-4-1-0). How does Whonix support work? While Qubes OS releases are supported for six months (www.qubes-os.org/doc/sup…releases) following each subsequent major or minor release, Whonix templates have their own support policy (www.qubes-os.org/doc/sup…releases) set by the Whonix Project. This policy requires Whonix template users to stay reasonably close to the cutting edge by upgrading to new stable releases of Qubes OS and Whonix templates within a month of their respective releases. To be precise: One month after a new stable version of Qubes OS is released, Whonix templates are no longer supported on any older release of Qubes OS. This means that users who wish to continue using Whonix templates on Qubes are usually required to upgrade to the latest stable Qubes OS version within one month of its release (unless the deadline is extended, as it has been in this case). One month after new stable versions of Whonix templates are released, older releases of Whonix templates are no longer supported. This means that users who wish to continue using Whonix templates on Qubes are usually required to upgrade to the latest stable Whonix template versions within one month of their release. (This point doesn’t apply to the present situation, since this announcement pertains to a new Qubes OS release, not a new Whonix template release. However, I’m mentioning it here for the sake of completeness, as it’s part of the Whonix support policy.) What does this mean for you? If you haven’t upgraded from Qubes 4.0 to Qubes 4.1 yet, and you use Whonix templates, this extension means you have a bit more time to upgrade before your Whonix templates are no longer supported. You should aim to upgrade to Qubes 4.1 (or discontinue use of Whonix templates) by 2022-04-20. If you’re already on Qubes 4.1 or you don’t use Whonix templates, you’re all set. This announcement doesn’t change anything for you.

The first one, in practice, affects only newer Intel systems (11th generation and later). For other systems, previous mitigations are already sufficient. Summary -------- On 2022-02-08, Intel published microcode updates [3] for some of their CPUs that fix security issues [4]. INTEL-SA-00561 (CVE-2021-0145) [7][8] affects Qubes installations on hardware with affected CPU models. Red Hat provides a good overview [5]: | A flaw was found in microcode. Fast store forwarding prediction in one | domain could be controlled by software previously executed in another | domain. Such control helps a malicious program running in user mode | (or guest VM) to trigger transient execution gadgets in supervisor | mode (or VMM), potentially leading to sensitive data disclosure. There is also a separate vulnerability -- INTEL-SA-00589 (CVE-2021-33120) [9] -- that seems to affect mainly low-power architecture CPUs, e.g., Atom. However, due to the sparse description of the issue, we cannot judge whether it affects Qubes OS. Impact ------- INTEL-SA-00561 (CVE-2021-0145) is another CPU vulnerability related to speculative execution (also called transient execution). If successfully exploited, it could allow an attacker to read information across security boundaries. In this case, the successful exploitation could allow an attacker-controlled VM to read information that should be accessible only to the hypervisor. This affects at least 10th generation mobile and 11th generation mobile and desktop Intel Core CPUs. For a full list of affected CPU models, see Intel's table [6] or Red Hat's summary [5].     Qubes OS 4.1.0 has been released! www.qubes-os.org/news/20…es-4-1-0 At long last, the Qubes 4.1.0 stable release has arrived! The culmination of years of development, this release brings a host of new features, major improvements, and numerous bug fixes. Read on to find out what’s new, how to install or upgrade to the new release, and all the noteworthy changes it includes. What’s new in Qubes 4.1.0? In case you still haven’t heard, Qubes 4.1.0 includes several major new features, each of which is explained in depth in its own article. Qubes Architecture Next Steps: The GUI Domain (www.qubes-os.org/news/20…i-domain) The GUI domain is a qube separate from dom0 that handles all display-related tasks and some system management. This separation allows us to more securely isolate dom0 while granting the user more flexibility with respect to graphical interfaces. (Note: The GUI domain is still experimental, so it’s an opt-in feature in Qubes 4.1.0 (www.qubes-os.org/news/20…i-domain).) Qubes Architecture Next Steps: The New Qrexec Policy System (www.qubes-os.org/news/20…y-system) Qrexec is is an RPC (remote procedure call) mechanism that allows one qube to do something inside another qube. The qrexec policy system enforces “who can do what and where.” Qubes 4.1 brings a new qrexec policy format, significant performance improvements, support for socket services, and policy notifications that make it easier to detect problems. New Gentoo templates and maintenance infrastructure (www.qubes-os.org/news/20…tructure) There are three new flavors of Gentoo templates, as well as an advanced infrastructure for automated building and testing, which also supports Linux kernel and Arch Linux building and testing. Improvements in testing and building: GitLab CI and reproducible builds (www.qubes-os.org/news/20…building) This article explains our work on continuous integration (CI), which automates and improves several aspects of the development process, and reproducible builds, which improves the security of the build and verification process. Reproducible builds for Debian: a big step forward (www.qubes-os.org/news/20…-forward) This article explains the tools and infrastructure we’ve built to verify official package builds by rebuilding them. While this was supposed to be possible in theory, making it a reality required significant work, including rewriting certain components from scratch. [1] Once available, the packages are to be installed via the Qubes Update tool or its command-line equivalents. [2] Dom0 must be restarted afterward in order for the updates to take effect. If you use Anti Evil Maid, you will need to reseal your secret passphrase to new PCR values, as PCR18+19 will change due to the new Xen binaries. Summary -------- On 2022-01-25, the Xen project published XSA-395, "Insufficient cleanup of passed-through device IRQs" [3]: | The management of IRQs associated with physical devices exposed to x86 | HVM guests involves an iterative operation in particular when cleaning | up after the guest's use of the device. In the case where an | interrupt is not quiescent yet at the time this cleanup gets invoked, | the cleanup attempt may be scheduled to be retried. When multiple | interrupts are involved, this scheduling of a retry may get | erroneously skipped. At the same time pointers may get cleared | (resulting in a de-reference of NULL) and freed (resulting in a | use-after-free), while other code would continue to assume them to be | valid. Impact ------- The precise impact is system-specific but would typically be a denial of service (DoS) affecting the entire host. Privilege escalation and information leaks cannot be ruled out. Only x86 HVM guests with one or more passed-through physical devices using multiple physical interrupts together can exploit this vulnerability. We’ve just focused on fixing bugs that were discovered and reported in the third release candidate. If you’re currently using any Qubes 4.1.0 release candidate, a regular update (https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/how-to-update/) is sufficient to upgrade to the latest one. Otherwise, read on for more about how to get started with testing Qubes 4.1.0-rc4. What’s new in Qubes 4.1.0? Until then, we plan to have new release candidates approximately every five weeks.
