Dear student,

You have probably been paying a contribution to public broadcast, at currently € 17.50 per month since you moved to Germany. Maybe you're so lucky to be able to share this with your flatmates in a shared apartment,
but you probably still feel that this is an unfair payment that you'd rather not make - understandable! So far, only people with an official status of a handicap or recipients of social security were allowed
to be exempt from the payment, but this is only the case for very few international students.

However now there decision that's been made by the Federal Administrative Court that states that all
students who don't have more money at their disposal than the maximum student grant (BAFöG) amount of currently €861 per month or € 10,332 per year, may file a claim for a hardship case and be exempt
from the payments.

You can file the claim online here:
https://www.rundfunkbeitrag.de/buergerinnen_und_buerger/formulare/befreiung_oder_ermaessigung_beantragen/index_ger.html
(German only, you may want to
get a native speaker to help if your German isn't sufficient).

Please make the following choices in the online form before putting in your personal data:
Befreiung aus sozialen Gründen ->
Weitere Leistungen ->
aufgrund einer Einkommensüberschreitung... ->
unter 17,50€: JA
Print the completed form and mail it as a registered letter.

If your claim is granted, you may even receive a refund of up to the last three years of payments. Please note that you will be asked to prove the amount of your income (bank account statements).

If your entire income exceeds the mentioned numbers, your claim will be rejected. Income from your job, payments received (from domestic or foreign sources) as well as scholarship rates will be considered.

Good luck for the claim!
