Peter Maahn Sterkenburg Had my 1 year anniversary last week, here is what I wrote: It was no easy year, quite the contrary.
Observations of my first year here - in no particular order: * Wonderfully practical people, those Finns. Things get done. * Things work. No matter the weather and circumstance. Or where in a forest you may be. * It’s quite refreshing to live and work in an environment with a low bullshit-threshold. One could wish for a few more open discussions, but then again, this works too! * When you ask for help, you get it. I find the level of customer service here a million times better than anything I have experienced in Copenhagen. You have a problem: you turn to someone and they will help you fix it. The practicality principle is strong here: no fluff, simply solutions. Nothing anywhere remotely frustrating. All my administration frustrations all year have only been in regard to the Danish system and the crap I have to deal with (still today!) * The general atmosphere is one of modern society meets healthy old-fashioned decency. * People are generally very good at tactical things: acting on the information given (related to the practicality mentioned). Not so much on zooming out, and big picture/strategic thinking. * What’s with the infinite fascination with malls and store/restaurant chains? We are not in the 90s anymore, people! It fits to the point below... * The food in restaurants is mostly terrible. We have found some great restaurants, but the average level is decidedly low, really low. It relates to the above point: too many chains and the completely non-adventurous food that is offered there. On this particular point I really miss Copenhagen and its ‘Noma’ ripple-effect dearly: every new cafe or restaurant has an inherent drive to create great food. It was not always so though: Helsinki in that regard is like Copenhagen 10-15 years ago. * Biking in Helsinki is not recommended, and that is putting it nicely. I don’t know what moron designed the bike paths here: definitely not someone who understands what it is to commute on a daily basis on a bike. * The language: wow, I wonder if I can ever learn it. I am picking up words here and there, and the fact that a lot is in both Swedish and Finnish really helps, I learn a lot through that, but wow… not sure I can pick up on this. Will try in Autumn though! * Proper winter: how great to have -20 and no half-assed winter as we had in CPH for the past 5-6 years. * It took Naia 6 months or so to feel really comfortable in her new daycare: realising the massive change for that little one, I have to remind myself that as an adult I am supposedly conditioned to deal with stress caused by moving to a new country and all that. Hmm, right… it’s not all that easy! * Travelling in the Helsinki area with a pram/stroller and a toddler: free! No worries, no stress. A nice gesture to parents! * Still waiting for loads of people to visit us! * Metal is life here 🤘🤘 * Napue gin & tonic is the best thing EVER!
