Retarded forms (from Latin retardo - to slow down) ensure that the active substance is stored in the body and then slowly enters the bloodstream. They are almost like "regular" drugs, but their effect develops slowly. Depot forms (from Latin dēpositum, "storehouse") work in a similar way.
