How Typhus was defeated. The disease was carried by lice, from which there was no escape until the 1920s, when Professor Rudolf Weigl invented a method of obtaining an effective vaccine. The lice were deliberately cultured by feeding on the blood of what they called "feeders" by attaching the cells with the parasite to their legs or thighs. Adult lice were infected, then cut open and created a vaccine.
