Direct Ophthalmoscopy Some of you may have had this procedure. An ophthalmoscopy is an eye exam to examine the retina (retina), optic nerve (optic nerve), and macula (yellow spot). Before the procedure begins, the person is given eye drops to dilate the pupil, which gives a wider view. The doctor then uses an ophthalmoscope to examine the above mentioned elements of the ocular fundus.
