Gray matter Gray matter, located under the cerebral cortex, owes its color to the high concentration of neurons. The white matter is myelin. Axons penetrating the white corpus callosum, which connects cerebral hemispheres, occupy much more volume than all cell soma, dendrites, and their spines combined.
