The story is written in a lively and humorous style, with descriptions of exotic landscapes and customs. W. O. McGeehan (1879-1933) was an American sports journalist and editor of the New York Herald Tribune. He served in the army during the Spanish–American War and worked as a correspondent in San Francisco before moving to the East Coast. He wrote about various sports, especially boxing, as well as his travels in Europe and Asia. He was married to writer and playwright Sophie Treadwell.

The Boulong casco lay on the Quiapo Market, which is on the left bank of the Pasig, just below the suspension-bridge. The Chinese junk—tradition says—was modeled after a whimsical emperor’s shoe, consequently the cascos of the Philippines, being really junks without sails, are not very dainty bits of naval architecture.
