I want to quickly talk to you about reflecting on your learning as this may be new to many of you.
Reflection plays a very important part in learning on healthcare courses, especially at university. It helped me throughout my studies and it still helps me today. It allows me to
think about what I did
what happened
why it happened
what I felt about it
what I would do differently.
By doing this I can learn even more from my experiences and set goals for the future. It is also something that healthcare professionals continue doing throughout their career.
The framework we used was designed by a Professor called Graham Gibbs in 1988 and is used by many universities and hospitals throughout the world.
Gibbs created a reflective cycle that you can follow to help.
It covers 6 stages:
Description of the experience
Feelings and thoughts about the experience
Evaluation of the experience, both good and bad
Analysis to make sense of the situation
Conclusion about what you learned and what you could have done differently
Action plan for how you would deal with similar situations in the future, or general changes you might find appropriate.
