Alex and his ‘droogs’ speak Nadsat, an innovative constructed language that contains English, Russian and traces of Eastern and Western languages. This paper investigates Nadsat linguistic and cultural features in the original text and compares them with La naranja mecánica, translated by Aníbal Leal in 1976 and Ana Quijada Vargas who translated Chapter Twenty-One in 1999. The Spanish translator therefore needs to ‘bend the language of the translation toward the original language’ and ‘retain the feeling of foreignness’ (Schleiermacher, 1992). The study’s findings reveal that Nadsat is an alien language because it belongs to the category of invented languages where the language is not rendered directly, and it needs deciphering and decoding first. This paper clarifies the position of Nadsat and considers it a special case in the family of invented languages. It is a conlang which needs translation within translation. While this comparative study contributes to our understanding of Nadsat in particular, and invented languages in general, it also aims to inform future translations of A Clockwork Orange, into Spanish and in different languages.
