Justice Minister Yariv Levin responds to a fiery speech from Supreme Court Chief Justice Esther Hayut, accusing her of being politically aligned with the opposition. “It turns out there’s another party in Israel — a party that didn’t run in the elections two months ago, a party that places itself about the Knesset, above the public referendum. What we heard this evening comes straight from the ‘black flag protests,’ it’s the same political agenda,” he says referring to the anti-corruption protesters that regularly targeted prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
By declaring judges, AGs, and all other lawyers a “political party” and the rule of law a “minority dictatorship,” our justice minister has effectively declared that the rule of law is no longer a matter of consensus in Israel. The “legalists” are opposed by the camp of law violators, supporters of arbitrariness and destruction of personal freedoms by the “majority of people.”
