Ghaddar, Mony, et al. show that longevity caused by activation of the transcriptional
activator of autophagy, TFEB/HLH-30, may not always require autophagy. Instead, they
present the alcohol-dehydrogenase-mediated anti-aging response (AMAR) as an HLH-30/TFEB-dependent,
but more importantly, necessary and sufficient anti-aging effector acting across interventions
and organisms.
